SUMMARY

This article describes why some TTS engines will spell a word rather than pronounce it, and what can be done to fix this problem.

SYMPTOMS

A word that should be pronounced by the TTS engine is instead spelled out.  Some common examples of this are unusual proper names, and phonetic spellings of letters (e.g. "aych", which is meant to force proper pronounciation of the letter "H").

RESOLUTION

Some TTS engines will spell words letter-by-letter if they are not defined in the TTS engine's grammar. So words like "aych" (the phonetic version of "H") may be spelled letter-by-letter, whereas words like "eye" (the phonetic version of "I") would be read normally since they are real words.

To see if this is the case, please run your TTS engine outside of Audium, and have it read the following string:

"aych ay eye ell"

If it reads it properly (i.e. as "H A I L"), then the issue needs to be addressed within Audium. However, if it spells out "A Y C H", then you should look into adding these words to your TTS engine's grammar.
